On October 31, 2009, the Pleasant Grove UT West Stake sent out the following letter in regards to Family Preparedness:
For many years we have been counseled by prophets of God to build up a supply of food to prepare against a time of need. While such times of need are often associated with natural disasters, perhaps the more likely scenarios are those of an economic or personal nature, such as job loss, personal injurty, illness, or other unforseen circumstances. We need not look past the current state of our economy to recognize the importance of following the council of our Church leaders to build up a supply of food.
In 2006, the First Presidency introduced a pamphlet entitled, "All is Safely Gathered In", encouraging members to do the following:
- Gradually build a small supply of food that is part of your normal, daily diet until it is sufficient for three months.
- Store drinking water.
- Establish a financial reserve by setting aside a little money each week, and gradually increase it to a reasonable amount.
- Once families have achieved the first three objectives, they are counseled to expand their efforts, as circumstances allow, into a supply of long term basic foods such as grains, legumes, and other staples.
For the entire year of 2010, the Stake Presidency counsels each member of the Pleasant Grove Utah West Stake to gradually build a small supply of food that is part of your normal, daily diet until it is sufficient for three months. The intent is for each family to achieve this goal by the year-end.
We invite you to join us as we follow the counsel fo our prophets in gradually building a small supply of food that is part of our normal, daily diet until it is sufficient for three months, and promise you will be blessed by so doing.
Sincerely,
Presidency of the Pleasant Grove Utah West Stake
I am assuming that most people who actually read this blog are in my stake.
I have personally seen the blessings that come from following this counsel.
So... how are you doing on your 3 month supply?
"Many people could ride out the storm-tossed waves in their economic lives if they had their...supply of food...and were debt-free. Today we find that many have followed this counsel in reverse: they have at least a year's supply of debt and are food-free."
- President Thomas S. Monson
"We can begin ever so modestly. We can begin with a one week's food supply and gradually build it to a month, and then to three months."
- Presidnet Hinckley
"May we ever remember the Lord's promise... 'If ye are prepared ye shall not fear!'"
- Presidnet Benson
"The revelation to store food may be as essential to our temporal salvation today as boarding the ark was to the people in the days of Noah!"
- President Benson
The first step is to begin.
The second is to continue.
The thrid step is to keep learning.
"Learn to sustain yourselves; lay up gain and flour, ans save it against a day of scarcity."
- President Brigham Young
